The University of New Orleans Choirs
The UNO choral ensembles include the Privateer Chorus, University Chorale, Gospel Choir, and the UNO Show Choir. They perform a wide variety of choral genres, sing in many languages, and perform with various instrumentations. Each choir is actively social and provides a strong, bonded group of friends within the larger UNO framework. They promote academic excellence, make a positive and noticeable difference in the local musical community, and bring attention to how choral singing can make a difference in people’s lives through musical outreach. UNO choirs have performed with the New Orleans Civic Symphony, members of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, the UNO Wind Ensemble, the Loyola University Orchestra, and various guest artists over the years. They were included in the Star Wars in Concert Tour, a New Orleans LPO production of Video Games Live, and in the New Orleans Festival Brasileiro 2010 and 2012.
The choirs exhibit a fine spirit of collaboration and have combined in concert with Tulane, Dillard, Xavier, and Loyola universities as well as the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, Ben Franklin High School, The Jefferson Chorale, and NOCCA (New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts) in the past five years. The UNO Chorale was the featured college choir for the State American Choral Directors Association convention (ACDA) in Baton Rouge in 2010 and a featured collegiate choir with Music Educators National Conference state convention in Baton Rouge in 2009.
UNO choral ensemble members also show a strong sense of community service and have performed with local artists such as The Tanglers and Betsy McGovern to raise funds for the Gulf Restoration Network. Their spring project entitled Together Bound, worked with New Orleans civic organizations and volunteer groups to raise awareness of and funds for New Orleans’ homeless citizens. Each student served several volunteer hours as part of this project.
The Privateer Chorus, made up of primarily UNO undergraduates, sings a variety of choral music and participates in two concerts each semester. The Privateers rehearse three days per week. The Privateer Chorus is directed by Dr. Carson and is open to any and all students, faculty, and staff at UNO who wish to make music, regardless of their major, degree track, or status. Open to all singers without audition, this choir meets MWF from 11-12:15.
The UNO Chorale is UNO’s premiere choral ensemble. Directed by Dr. Carson, this auditioned choir performs a variety of literature both sacred and secular. In addition to the seasonal concerts given during the academic year, the group sings for and serves as one of the recruiting ensembles for the Department of Music and performs annually around New Orleans. Many members of this choir choose to participate in the annual Intercollegiate honor choir at the state ACDA convention. Members of this choir often have church jobs, perform in opera scenes, sing in other choirs, compose music, and consider themselves choir nerds!
